Study Stuff Update: Multivitamins during pregnancy reduce risk of low birth weight
A new study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, has found mothers who took multivitamins during pregnancy were at a significantly reduced risk of having babies with a low birth weight, compared to mothers who took iron-folic acid supplementation.
Low birth weight is considered to be the most common cause of global infant mortality under 5 years of age, study authors said.
Multivitamins have the possibility to reduce low birth weights by 17%, the authors believe.
The authors acknowledge that the research in the study is limited; however it represents an important step in continuing research into best prenatal health and care. Always discuss health concerns with your GP or obstetrician.
